The lifeline in her hand

For the second time since his leaving
The moon is almost full
Splendour of the night suspended
Above the winter world
For him her face is upside-down
A child stood on her hands
Smiling
Where steam lifts off the land by day
On equatorial line
Now finally the wait is done
The lifeline in her hand
Precious as a baby
First letter from her son
27th February 2010, Hounoux, for Jude with love of course

  1. I loved
    "Splendour of the night suspended
    Above the winter world"
and the last two lines - such a touching emotional deeply human moment!

  3. I was so pleased to hear the news from Jude as, understandably, she was craving any word and desperate to know how Josh was doing in deepest Borneo. She commented last month when I posted my poem 'Halfway up the sky' from Goa, with the orange moon, that she always looks at the moon and thinks of others looking up and seeing the same moon(Though I have just discovered it looks upside down in the southern hemisphere!) The moon here just now is silver in a chill sky and beautiful, but sooo different from the moon in Goa.

  4. Thank you Sally, words so wonderfully put together in this poem to capture and celebrate today. Also such lovely comments from Jen and Pam,yes I was so excited to hear from Josh at last, not long seperated I know but the first moon cycle we have been apart. I so enjoyed listening to him talk as I read and it was such a reminder of how personal a hand written letter is, that sense that his hands had touched the pen and paper. Being a soppy Mum I wanted to hug it!!
