Silence

Silence

Soft rain falling
Soundless
Small drops on every leaf
Upon the earth
The sky
A slip in silk
Smooth strokes across the pool
So the silence
Unpeopled
Just high and sweet the serin’s song
Rinses rings
Diamond shine and shower
Bright solace for the soul

  1. This is lovely Sally- a moment of calm and sweet relief after those sticky days and nights? I have enjoyed following your summer. A small consolation for not being with you this year. Jude and I had a lovely day at the Bishop's Palace in Wells, the sun shone and we were both left feeling relaxed and uplifted. X

  2. You are partly right Pam about how I came to write this poem. I had an afternoon on my own whilst our guests went to the coast and Andy went to Toulouse, and though I was of course in full 'femme de menage' mode, cleaning the house, I nonetheless felt the real balm of being on my own and no other people -'unpeopled'. I even had the radio and tv off so that I could be still and quiet and have my own thoughts. I love our many many guests but sometimes crave a small break to be alone, of course.

  3. I can imagine it was truly welcomed Sally,I would go completely insane without such moments. I love the way your poem evokes 'reflection' as in the water, light and self. I echo Pam's comment about our day at Bishop's Palace. Pam was a brilliant guide and the tour was extended by some lovely moments of sitting in the sun,to talk and soal in the space. When I got home I was treated to the most wonderful natural light show. The sky went dark grey, it rained yet the evening golden sunlight shone through so brightly I saw golden rain and a full rainbow arc, every colour of the spectrum was so strong. It transformed into a magnificent sunset. I felt like I witnessed a heaven sent moment. A wonderful ending to a wonderful day.
