All enclosed within
In November
on a day of mist and grey
cloud hung over the valley
colour-muted, cold, just eight degrees
how good to stoke a fire
paper, logs fresh-split and sticks
match lit, fire-lighters tang and flare
a glow and crackle shift of wood, settling
as fire ignites and primitive, my heart is glad
and comforted.
Light and lift before the heat
the safety in the circle, hearth glowing
all enclosed within
what’s wild and wolf, wind in the stack
dread and chill, winter all unglamorous
withheld
as indoors warms and glows
like memories of childhood, flicker firelight family
the safety in the circle, hearth glowing
November’s gift and gladness
all enclosed within.

I love 'what's wild and wolf wind in the stack'. It took me to outside your back door with the Hounoux winter winds blowing. You've caught for me the childhood feelings 'flicker firelight family'. You must have been pleased how those words fell onto the page! xx
ReplyDeleteLit my passion with this one, always a lover of making a fire. Wild and wolf wind in the stack took me to the world of stories Clare, feeling safer that the fire protects that scary entry point! Yes Sally your words can take us to different places which can also change with new readings. Happy memories of my flicker firelight circle last Christmas with Josh&Kyra came to mind and lovely camp fires surrounded by happy glowing faces. It really is the season to get snuggled down, feeling sad not sharing my fire or yours.
