Hockney at the RA

Hockney at the RA

Though we’re hot and hectic, swept along
All in a throng
Conditions scarcely ideal
The jostling, the jockeying
Still, still, enter the room
Wait for the colour hit
Like firework fountain bursts in spurts
Spectrum pouring in streams
Wall after wall aflame
Oil and watercolour, pastel, ipad
Only the brightest tints
A magician, pyrotechnician
Has plundered the rainbow, run amok
From scarlet to violet
Trees and trees and turning seasons
Glorious vistas dizzy dance
Hills in folds, Yorkshire wolds
Tracks and tunnels asking questions
Whither whence and why?
Drowned in colour, washed, uplifted
We’re spellbound in the throng
Swept along, but follow
Follow his siren song
Alice through the mirror stepped
Or Dorothy in Oz
Dazzled on a drugless trip
So Hockney has us all in thrall
Bewitched in Wonderland

  1. What a feel good show, and what a brilliant artist. I read your poem with speed, it brought back the day, such a sensory experience. What a feel good poem! Josh and Phil went yesterday and they loved it too.
