Yesterday we went to hell

Yesterday we went to hell

Yesterday we went to hell
My friend and I
First circle, not in a handcart
But jarred over rutted roads
To Vellore then on a shopping spree
Arriving, of course, in the overhead
Beat of the heat of the sun
Merciless, in search of saris cooking pots and sweets
Thank god for our local guides
Holding our hands in the dust and the shuffle
Battle through traffic, squalor and noise
Blaring and glaring
Random road-works, stenches stinks
Too long in the high and headache
Bright-white sun-light
Feet in the filth, wrangling for fruit
Best price
Drip drop time stopped
Sweating in streams
Hot as hell’s first circle
We went to yesterday

  1. My idea of hell too and I can only imagine it (usually pretty far off the real thing!). I wonder if Oxford Street and the rush hour travelling by tube would be their hell? You do get to experience 'real' in your travels and I can feel poems for one candle fund coming together nicely! xxx

  2. Where would I be these days Jude, without you as my follower and commenter! Pam said as we stood in the heat and filth and racket,' This is my idea of hell' It's such an assault on all the senses and above all the burning high-noon sun is what makes it so difficult for us weary old ladies! Would love to have you with us on a trip to India one day. Rajasthan where we are now is so very very beautiful. Must say to you that looking at the Taj Mahal and being moved to tears, one thought I had was 'What a wonderful profession architecture is'- was designed by a Persian architect. Fab-u-lous!
